The kids literally went dotty for this one – and no prizes for guessing who was our inspiration for this project….Yes our very own ‘Princess of Polka Dots’ – Yayoi Kusama! The kids listened to the story of how she got hallucinations as a kid, wherein she saw fields of flowers with dots as their centres. The viewed her “Infinity Mirrored Room” and other paintings with polka dots.
For our project, we used all the scrap paper in our studio to punch out dots of various colours, which were laid out on the table. The kids painted abstracts or landscapes on their paper using tempera paints.
They then dug into the pile of dots and picked out colours that contrasted with the paints they had used. They were instructed to cover an entire space with glue and then place the dots on it, rather than individually apply glue on each dot. This speeded up the process and made it easier for the kids as well.
Our dotty masterpieces are now ready to showcase. Here are some!
