The Crow as Metaphor

This project was inspired by the Indian artist, Amit Ambalal. His show in London in 2006, was presented by Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai and Gallery Maya, London entitled, Black Spring of the Blue God. After discussing his style and brush strokes, middle school children delved into their knowledge of mythology and how we perceive the crow in these.

We also watched an interview of the artist in which he talks about what inspires him. The students took up the crow as a metaphor. Some kids saw the crow as a raucous creature, some saw him as evil and some as a communicator with the dead. Students created their paintings around their perception of the bird, inspired by the style of the artist. They also wrote down their reflections in their journals.

Here are some works.
