Very often parents ask me how they can build skills in their young children, so that they can draw better. They assume that artists are generally born with an inborn talent, and only special people are born with this talent. What they do not know is that the best of artists have learnt to draw by doing loads of observation drawing, loads of them, and regularly. Therefore you can safely conclude that ANYONE CAN LEARN TO DRAW AT ANY AGE.
To prove my point I am posting images from the drawing workshop I had recently with Grade 2 students. Various techniques were used towards the final output – observation drawing, expoloration of line and value, drawing from imagination and left brained drawing. You can see the results. The children were thrilled, especially with the horse which they had drawn upside down, being shown only small parts of it at a time. They were sure the horse would not have turned out so good had they tried to ‘copy’ it.
